Wet organics containers are very susceptible to attracting odors and insects. Dealing with the source is the key. Collecting and storing organics, use biodegradable materials to line the bin such as Bin Doctor Kitchen Bin Liners that will absorb moisture and mess. This will keep organics from sticking to the cart and reduce cleaning efforts. Empty your mini bin daily; periodically rinse with a Bin Doctor Degreaser.
Moisture - Controlling moisture will allow you to take control of your organics. Clean the kitchen bin and curbside carts frequently with environmentally safe products and wipe dry. Keep your cart in a shaded area.
Odors- are a result of rotting, so remember your collection days to ensure organics do not have enough time to break down and produce odors which then attracts insects.
Maggots - Flies search for a food source and lay eggs, which hatch into maggots. Keep your bins clean for worry free composting. Freeze uncooked scraps meat until collection day to avoid maggots and odors.
Fruit Flies- During warm weather fruit flies can be captured with a bowl of vinegar covered with plastic wrap with several small holes in it.
Animals -If raccoons or Bears are getting into your Green Bin, use a 12 inch bungy cord to secure your Green Bin closed. Remember to remove the bungy cord before placing your Green Bin out for collection.
